The Spam Fight

Like most, I hate the tons of spam hitting my inbox. I’m sure that a big chunk of the volume can be attributed to the fact that I make my email address available here on these web pages, as well various newsgroups and online communities. I could use throw-away addresses, or take steps to make it harder for the spammers to harvest my address from these pages, but those steps either make my life more complicated or make it harder for people to reach me. My solution, a great new tool, POPFile, by John Graham-Cumming. This delightful open source tool uses Naive Bayes to intelligently filter my incoming spam at an accuracy of 99.6% (my personal rate as of November 23, 2002). I’m using it on two different machines, one using Eudora as the mail client and the other using Outlook. Fantastic results on both setups. I highly recommend it.
